I haven’t created in a bit. It’s been about a couple of weeks, but I just haven’t had the motivation to. Instead, I want to show you one of my older pieces, but in progress shot form. I'm not very good at taking progress shots. I tend to get the beginning and then the final layer of my piece. This is one of the very few instances where I got a decent number of shots to show you a step-by-step. This piece is called The Inevitable.
My process:
Get all of my tools that I will use: paper (it’s always a 9x12in cold press paper), pencil, watercolor palettes, kneaded eraser, brushes. I don’t immediately start; most of the time I’ll just sit there and ponder about how I’m feeling at that moment.
Once I’m done pondering, before I do anything, I’ll put on some music. I usually have a playlist of classical music or sometimes it’s a mixture of genres. I’ll sketch a contour drawing (a lot of the time I won’t look at my paper as I’m doing this) on my watercolor paper. When I’m finished I tweak things to my liking.
Sometimes I’ll do a quick light wash on my paper. I love a good wet on wet technique. It’s one of my favorite parts of painting with watercolor because the paint flows where it wants to; and I sit back and observe. My go to palette that I prefer is a variety of pinks, purples, white, sometimes red and brown. There’s no reason I go to those specifically other than I just like using those colors. Will I ever use different colors one day? The world may never know.
After each layer is painted and dried, I’ll think if I’m done or not. If I’m not done I’ll take a break from it then later on I’ll look at it again. When I’m done making any changes I’ll take a picture of it.
That’s my process whenever I paint. It’s a lot of uncertainty, going with the flow and accepting it for what it is. I enjoy painting my faces, it brings me so much happiness regardless of the themes behind it.
Do you have a specific process on how you create or is it different each time?
Thats so amazing, thank you for showing us your process. The title The Inevitable is so good connected to this painting.
You are a one of a kind skilled artist!
I love this.
